It Goes A Little Something Like This

Posted: January 30, 2009 in Music

I’ve added a discography page on the sidebar – it’s a bit rough and ready right now, but it’ll improve with time – and there’ll be some more changes in the forthcoming weeks as I get to grips with this thing…

Maybe I should mention a bit about what my music actually sounds like. Well, I could just tell you that’s it’s electronic-based and let you draw your own conclusions about it, or I could hit you with a list of my influences and see if that helps. A little while ago I read somewhere that it was absolutely vital that you listed your influences on your Myspace page (otherwise nobody will ever listen to a note of your output) so I dutifully started a list:

Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, Faust, Can, Miles Davis, Sonic Youth, Hawkwind, The Clash, Tangerine Dream, Autechre, Return To Forever, R Stevie Moore, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Max Tundra, The Fall, DJ Shadow, Four Tet, Solypsis, Neu!, Beck, Pavement, Black Sabbath, Mouse On Mars, Throbbing Gristle, Sun City Girls

That’s as far as I got before I started getting a headache. Based on recent listening I could add Casino Versus Japan, King Crimson, Big Black, Loop, Van Der Graaf Generator and a pile of others but maybe I’ve made my point. Especially as I don’t sound too much like any of them (well, not all the time anyway)

Instead of all of that, I could just post a track from each of my three albums(*) to date and let people work it out for themselves – so here you go:

Callisto from Intentional Distortion 2007

Kakemono from Rising From The Deep 2008

Old Lions from When I Was King Of The Wilderness 2008

There’s some more music on the Myspace profile (the links in the sidebar)

Really, I wasn’t trying to be cynical about the influence list thing above (oh, OK, just a bit then) but sometimes I find it odd that people don’t want to listen to anything new unless they know it sounds like something they’re already familiar with. Is it just the attention span of the audience that’s shrunk – or is it that there’s so much stuff out there now that that’s the only way to process it all? Answers on a postcard to…

As for RPM? Well, I’m still not thinking too much about it. I intend to start exactly on the stroke of midnight here in the UK – just like I did last year. The last two years the first track I wrote ended up not being used, so I need to get that out of my system ASAP (although this year it may be a classic) expect some notes about it later on – probably Saturday night as I psyche myself up to begin. I expect to do plenty of thinking about it in those last few hours.

(*) Although I count Thee Crumb Tapes as an album, the simple fact that it consists of two nineteen-minute tracks makes it difficult to extract a section from it as a representative sample. Go have a listen to the whole thing if you’re curious.

Hi there RSM, thanks for dropping by – been meaning to buy a load of your stuff for ages. One day I might actually do it…
